If you want to change your name as part of your divorce, you should know that once our attorneys have petitioned the court for a name change and have received the order granting it, your name will be officially changed.
However, after that, you should do the following as soon as possible:
– Update your driver’s license
– Update your passport
– Notify the Social Security Office of your New Name
After all of these legal documents have been changed, you will officially have changed your name in the eyes of the state, however, there will still be important documents that you should update.
These include but are not limited to:
– Credit card providers/banks
– Service providers (insurance, health care, etc.)
Many of them will be able to change your name over the phone, but some will require copies of your paperwork in order to do so.
